What a terrible situation where some Black people and other oppressed people can actually find themselves in the same place as those fascists who regard them as inferior sub-humans and want to deny them basic rights, lock them up permanently, or outright exterminate them!This has come out sharply around the question of COVID vaccines—in opposition to getting the vaccines. While there is, particularly among Black people, some awful history with medical experiments, and some bad experience, historically and right to today, with medical authorities and medical treatment, it is a fact that the COVID pandemic has, in this country, hit Black people (as well as Latinos and Native Americans) the hardest, and with the heaviest death toll; and it is a fact that the vaccines against COVID have been clearly demonstrated to be safe and to be overwhelmingly successful in preventing serious illness and death from COVID. So, there is no good reason NOT to get these vaccines—and refusing to do so not only puts those refusing at risk of serious illness and possibly death, but also exposes others to the same risks.And people are not just refusing to get the vaccines because of any legitimate concerns about the safety (or the effectiveness) of the vaccines. Far too many people—especially lunatic anti-scientific fascists but far too many others as well, including among those hardest hit by the COVID pandemic—are refusing to get the vaccines because of a combination of crazy conspiracy theories, other anti-scientific garbage, and rampant individualism. People insist that “it is a matter of personal choice” whether to get the vaccine—and those refusing to get the vaccine argue (often angrily and belligerently) that “it is a matter of my personal freedom.”This is nonsense—very harmful nonsense! Individual freedom is not absolute—as almost everyone will agree when this is posed to them in terms that do not run up against their individualism. For example, few will argue that someone should have the freedom to drive 100 miles an hour through a school zone when children are crossing the street. And any reasonable person will agree that it is not okay for white supremacists to lynch Black people—or for the police to wantonly murder Black people—simply because they feel like it—because they see it as an expression of their “individual freedom” (and “personal choice”).Along the same lines, it is worth noting that, in opposition to civil rights laws, people who owned businesses, such as stores and restaurants, and wanted to discriminate by refusing to serve Black people, would very frequently argue that it was a matter of their “freedom” to discriminate in this way (their right to do what they wanted with their business). And we have seen the same kinds of arguments from people who want to discriminate against other oppressed groups. Should that “individual freedom,” to discriminate in that way, be upheld? It would be impossible to live in any society where “individual freedom” (or “personal choice”) were absolute. The question is: Are expressions of individual freedom, or restrictions on individual freedom, good or bad—do they make for a better, or worse, society?This is why no woman should ever be forced to bear a child against her will, and it should therefore NOT be legal to deny women the right to abortion. | 50 years after end of dollar’s link to gold: U.S. faces new crisis By Masao Suzuki San José, CA – Fifty years ago, on August 15, 1971, then-President Nixon ended the U.S. dollar’s link with gold. This marked a retreat from the economic supremacy of the United States after World War II. Less than four years later, the fall of Saigon marked a defeat for the United States and a turning point in U.S. domination of the developing world. In 1944 the United States hosted a meeting at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, to set out a post-World War II economic agreement. At the meeting, the United States’ plan dominated over a British plan crafted by famous economist John Maynard Keynes. This was the end of British imperial financial leadership and the beginning of U.S. financial supremacy. Instead of the fixed exchange rate of the Gold Standard of the late 1800s and early 1900s led by Great Britain, there was now a new system of fixed exchange rates, based on both gold and the U.S. dollar. This so-called Bretton Woods agreement established fixed exchange rate system that facilitated international trade and investment dominated by the United States. Since the other major capitalist economies – Britain, France, Germany and Japan – were focused on rebuilding after World War II, and because of the socialist Soviet Union, United States saw little economic competition. The United States was the economic power in the world and held most of the world’s gold. But the recovery of Germany, Japan and other capitalist nations in the 1950s and 1960s put pressure on the U.S.-dollar centered economic system. With other countries holding U.S. dollars to back their own currencies, the United States was supposed to hold gold to back the U.S. dollar. But as doubts about continued U.S. economic supremacy mounted, gold began draining away and finally Nixon had to give up on backing the U.S. dollar with gold in 1971. This began the modern flexible exchange rate system, where the prices, or exchange rates, of most currencies move up and down in the foreign exchange market. After a period economic instability in the 1970s, the United States was able to stabilize its economy through deregulation and increased exploitation of the working class under President Reagan in the 1980s. But with the Great Financial Crisis of 2008, a new period of relative economic decline for the United States began. In the last 20 years China has grown to be the major economic competitor of the United States. With a socialist economy, China’s gains are also stoking doubts about U.S. capitalism. The relative stabilization of the U.S. economy in the 1980s and the fall of the U.S.S.R. in 1991 emboldened the United States to be more aggressive militarily, leading the invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. But now the United States is trying to reduce its military commitments in the Middle East and pivot to Asia in preparation for a war with China. The Afghan government built and financed to the tune of almost $1 trillion by the United States after the 2001 invasion has collapsed. The United States economy managed to weather the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic through massive government borrowing and spending. The total government debt, as compared to size of the economy, is now as large as during World War II. The U.S. central bank, or Federal Reserve, has not only created trillions of dollars to buy U.S. government bonds, but expanded its bond buying to mortgage-backed bonds and other bonds. But despite the vaccinations of 60% of Americans who are twelve or older, the U.S. economy is again coming under stress with the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic fueled by the Delta variant. One sign of this is the re-emergence of inflation for the first time since before the financial crisis. The looming cut-off of government unemployment aid and eviction moratorium over the next two months will increase hunger and homelessness at a time when economic inequality has increased with the pandemic. While another economic crisis does not appear to be around the corner, the declining strength of the United States around the world points to another period of economic turbulence. |

¡Solidarémonos con las mujeres y los pueblos de Afganistán! En Afganistán, que durante décadas ha sido escenario de guerras por poderes, el poder fue entregado a los misóginos talibanes como resultado de las sucias políticas de las potencias hegemónicas globales. Esta situación,
que causó gran rabia e ira entre las mujeres y los pueblos del Afganistán y de todo el mundo, reveló una vez más la siguiente verdad: no hay poder en el que podamos apoyarnos más que el poder propio, la autoorganización y la legítima defensa. Lo que sucedió ayer en Afganistán expuso muy claramente la hipocresía de los Estados occidentales. Las potencias de la OTAN han demostrado claramente que para ellas, valores como la democracia, la libertad y los derechos de las mujeres no eran más que herramientas para encontrar una excusa para sus propias políticas sucias. Quienes intentaron legitimar su ocupación con “los derechos de la mujer” hace 20 años ahora dejan las vidas de millones de mujeres a merced de los talibanes.
Los que entregaron Afganistán a los talibanes hoy y los que ocuparon Afrin, Serêkaniyê, Girê Spî a la República turca ayer son las mismas potencias. Quienes ayer dieron luz verde a la invasión turca de Rojava y el noreste de Siria, repiten hoy el mismo escenario en Afganistán. Desde la perspectiva de los pueblos, y especialmente de las mujeres, no hay gran diferencia entre quienes están en el poder como resultado de negocios sucios.
Al decir “No tenemos nada en contra de las creencias de los talibanes”, Erdoğan, el jefe del régimen fascista turco, admitió que comparten la misma mentalidad. De hecho, el plan de los Estados Unidos de entregar el control del aeropuerto de Kabul a la fascista República Turca debe entenderse dentro de este marco. La entrega del control del aeropuerto a Erdoğan debe verse como un paso más para fortalecer a Turquía, que dirige su política a través de la organización de pandillas. Se trata de una gran amenaza y un gran peligro para los pueblos y, en particular, para las mujeres.
Al igual que en Afrin, donde se fundó el YPJ, que inspira a mujeres de todo el mundo, y donde hoy las mujeres son subyugadas y asesinadas como resultado de las políticas de las potencias hegemónicas globales, también las mujeres en Afganistán se enfrentan a la misma amenaza ahora. Esto se ve presagiado por el aumento de la violencia contra la mujer en los últimos meses y los asesinatos de mujeres pioneras.
Como pueblo y mujeres kurdas, sabemos muy bien que la única manera de defender nuestra existencia y voluntad contra las políticas imperialistas y coloniales de las potencias hegemónicas mundiales es a través de la organización. Sin autopodar, autoorganización y defensa propia, no será posible construir y mantener una vida libre. Tanto como personas como como movimiento, hemos experimentado y seguimos experimentando esta realidad muy fuertemente. El complot internacional contra nuestro líder Abdulá Ocalan el 15 de febrero de 1999 es el ejemplo más concreto de ello. Desde las ocupaciones de ISIS en Rojava y Başûrê (Sur / Iraquí) Kurdistán, especialmente en Shengal y
Kobanê, hasta las ocupaciones de Turquía aquí, las políticas coloniales y genocidas que enfrentamos se basan en el equilibrio de los intereses del capitalismo global.
Del mismo modo, la entrega del control de Afganistán a los talibanes, enemigos de las mujeres y los pueblos, se produjo en el contexto de los intereses geoestratégicos perseguidos por los Estados occidentales, especialmente los Estados Unidos, en Oriente Próximo y Asia Central. Una vez más, vemos que para los poderes en cuestión, los deseos, la voluntad, los sueños, las esperanzas y los esfuerzos de los pueblos que viven en estas tierras no importan en absoluto. Porque no sólo cosifican esas tierras, que sólo ven desde el colonizadorperspectivo, sino también las personas que viven en esas tierras. No hay nada que los titulares de estas pólizas de 20 años de antigüedad no hagan para satisfacer sus propios intereses. Es por eso que buscar líneas rojas, cualquier política humanitaria o genuina en el Estado occidental no es ni siquiera ingenuidad, sino ignorancia. Quienes
afirmaron luchar contra los talibanes por sus propios intereses y que han sacrificado la vida de 200.000 personas, hoy hacen tratos sucios con esas mismas potencias como si nada hubiera pasado.
Durante los años de la ocupación y el régimen talibán, las que más lucharon y resistieron por una democracia real, la libertad y una vida digna fueron las mujeres. En el período más difícil, en las circunstancias más difíciles, las mujeres del Afganistán encontraron la manera de organizarse. Con el poder y el apoyo que damos, y la solidaridad y la defensa que mostramos como mujeres, tenemos plena fe en que tejerán su resistencia no sólo contra los talibanes, sino contra todos los poderes y mentalidades misóginos. Desde el Kurdistán hasta Afganistán, se construirá una vida libre y una democracia real bajo el liderazgo de mujeres organizadas. Como mujeres del Kurdistán, hoy apoyamos a las mujeres y los pueblos afganos, al igual que ayer. Instamos a todas las mujeres, especialmente a las mujeres del Oriente Medio, a que se solidarizan con nuestras hermanas del Afganistán, alzan sus voces y defienden sus vidas, logros y sueños. ¡Potencienmos las alianzas de nuestras mujeres
